Story
During the 1920's, the absolute evil of Stalinist Communism was in the future. Thoughtful people were looking for a political philosophy that would forestall another World War and offer a just alternative to the brutalities of unregulated capitalism and fascism. Tom Spicer, a Bronx-born, multilingual combat veteran, saw communism as the answer. After joining the Party, his various skills came to the attention of the Soviet security services who enlisted him as a hit man to combat Nazis and fascists in Europe. He performs his tasks skillfully and without hesitation until Mina, his fellow-spy and lover, alerts him to his superiors' scheme to make him the unwitting assassin, not of the fascist enemy, but of fellow Reds in furtherance of a power play within the service...
So warned, Spicer and Mina disguise themselves and go underground where they must avoid capture by their former comrades,as well as by the fascists he continues to hunt--leading to the attempted assassination of Hitler himself! Their desperate travels take them from Salzburg to Munich to Vienna through a series of breathtaking plot twists and narrow escapes until the novel's dramatic and surprising denouement. It is both a hair-raising thriller and a distinguished work of historic espionage.

Our Book Review
FFascinating, intelligent spy novel This book is an incredible tour de force I found so fascinating that I read it straight through in essentially two sessions. I could not put it down. It is set in Germany's Post WWI Weimar Republic where Nazis and the Russian-supported Communists are fighting to the death, each aiming to overthrow the democratic government. It is a story of assassinations, intrigue, and romance involving an American veteran of the War who finds himself spying and killing for the Communists. The author uses his vast knowledge of this period of history to form an integral and enriching part of the page-turning narrative. This is a spy thriller, not a history lesson, but the reader also will learn (or be reminded of) a bit of history that has drawn more attention in recent times. Similarly, he manages to make the characters alive, complex, and not mere vehicles for the riveting plot.
Fantastic story, well told! Fun and Smart book. I liked this book from the start--the writer clearly did his research and provided a lot of fascinating period detail about a time in Germany about which I knew nothing. The story was suspenseful and surprising--I was sorry to see it end and came here to see if he's published another. . .not yet but soon, I'm sure!
A gripping spy thriller - I couldn't put it down. Fast paced, plot-driven, and full of fascinating historical details and nail-biting action, this was a hugely satisfying read. I loved the genre and the premise of this well-written, compulsively readable book. I hope the author will write another!
